Everything Works…

I’ll never forget it.

A few years ago I was attending a conference for coaches. In all, there were a few hundred of us there to learn. Some of the attendees were experienced trainers while others were still new and wet behind the ears.

So there we all sat in a large hotel convention room eagerly waiting for the speaker to take the podium. We didn’t even know what the title of the presentation was going to be but we knew the presenter. His name was Dan John and he is a pretty big deal in strength training circles; both as a coach and as an athlete himself. I didn’t know what he had in store but I knew he was going to share the secret… He was going to teach the thing that was going to change everything.

His words shocked me…

After taking the stage and telling a few jokes Dan got to the meat of the issue. “You all want to know what the best strategy is, don’t you? You all want to know what works, right?”

Yeah, yeah, yeah… We were on the edge of our seats to know.

“Everything.” he casually said. “Everything works…”

Huh?

He continued, “You want to lose weight? There are hundreds of ways that can work. You want to gain muscle? Again, lots of ways. More flexibility? More endurance? More strength? Everything works…”

Crickets…

We all scratched our heads a little bit confused as though waiting for a punchline.

“…for about 2 weeks.” he finished. “Everything works for about 2 weeks. Even stuff that seems kind of crazy, if you attack it hard enough, will give some amount of results for about 2 weeks. If you want better than that, though… If you want staying power beyond 2 weeks you need something more than a quick trick. You need to do things in a way that makes sense for the long term.”

The more I thought about what he said the more it made sense in terms of training. Since then, though, I’ve found that the advice makes sense in other domains as well.

Take Internet Marketing (IM), for example…

There are lots of tactics out there; tips and tricks to help you to make money online through IM. Lots of programs offer proof that the tactic works. Just remember, everything works… for about 2 weeks.

You can message your Facebook friends with offers all day and you will get some sales… until they all drop you like a spam-filled potato. You can email your list a new offer every day or even send ten emails a day pushing an offer and you will get some sales… until the people start smashing the unsubscribe button so fast that Aweber’s servers can barely keep up.

These are just a couple of obvious examples but they make the point pretty well… Everything works… for about 2 weeks. If you want your business to last longer than 2 weeks, though, you need to offer more than tricks for a quick grab… You need to offer value because value, my friends, never goes out of style.

To Your Success.
